The Magnificence of Mae Takhrai

Spanning across Sankampaeng, Doi Saket, and Mae-On districts of Chiang Mai, as well as parts of Ban Thi and Muang districts in Lamphun, Mae Takhrai National Park is a majestic spread of approximately 513.20 square kilometers. The park, characterized by its intricate mountain ranges and status as a vital source for the Ping River Basin, is a sanctuary of valuable flora and fauna. Additionally, it's imbued with historical significance, following a visit by the Royal Family in 1982 (B.E. 2525), which led to the initiation of rural development projects. These projects aimed at improving the livelihoods and moral values of local residents, aligning with Buddhist principles.

The Park's Establishment and Development

In 1987 (B.E. 2530), the initial plans to elevate Mae Takhrai from a wildlife sanctuary to a national park were set in motion. The rich biodiversity, including well-preserved forests and vital water sources like Huai Mae Takhrai, Huai Mae-On, Huai Mae Ta, and Huai Mae Kuang, was crucial in this transition. By 1988 (B.E. 2531), further assessments reinforced the suitability of Mae Takhrai as a national park, highlighting its ecological importance and potential as a tourist destination.

Geographical Features

Mae Takhrai's terrain is a complex tapestry of mountains, varying from 400 to 2,031 meters above sea level. The park's landscape comprises rainforests, limestone mountains, mixed deciduous forests, and grasslands, creating a mosaic of ecological habitats. These areas are pivotal as water sources for key tributaries feeding the Ping River.

Climate

The park experiences three distinct seasons: rainy (May-October), winter (November-February), and summer (March-April), with a comfortable climate throughout the year. Maximum temperatures average around 32°C, while the minimum can drop to about 20°C.

Flora and Fauna

Mae Takhrai is a haven for diverse species, featuring deciduous forests, pine forests, and grasslands. Significant tree species include teak, redwood, rubber, and bamboo, among others. The park is also a sanctuary for wildlife like deer, wild boars, gibbons, and various bird species, including parrots and owls.

Attractions and Activities

• Doi Langka: Standing at 2,031 meters, this fifth-highest mountain in Thailand offers a year-round cool climate. Visitors can enjoy the blooming of Hom Chom and Rose of Hundred Years flowers during February-March and April-May, respectively. The challenging 12-km trek requires an overnight stay.
• Tat Moei Waterfall: This 15-meter high waterfall is one of the park's most beautiful spots, located 16 km from the park office. The area offers spectacular views and a 3-km hike through dry evergreen forests.
• Mae Takhrai Waterfall: A unique single-tiered waterfall, surrounded by exotic forest plants and wildflowers. Located 6 km from the park office, the area offers a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts.
• Mae Takhrai Reservoir: Home to various aquatic species and scenic views, this reservoir is surrounded by nature trails. Other reservoirs and dams in the park include Huai Pha An, Huai Khamin, Huai Bong, and Huai Mae Takhrai Dam.

Facilities

Currently, Mae Takhrai National Park does not offer accommodation but provides camping areas for visitors. Those interested in camping must bring their own tents and supplies, as the park is relatively new and still developing its facilities.
